On Thursday, Brazil’s national crop agency, Conab, raised its forecast for the country’s 2024-25 sugarcane crop but noted that production would still be below the previous season’s levels due to reduced yields in key areas caused by low rainfall and high temperatures.
The updated projection for sugarcane output is now 689.83 million metric tonnes, slightly higher than the 685.86 million tonnes forecasted in April but still less than the 713.21 million tonnes in 2023-24.
This revision was made due to improved climate conditions in northeastern Brazil, which supported better crop development there.
However, in the key center-south region, which is Brazil’s primary sugarcane-growing area, “low rainfall levels and high temperatures are expected to reduce output compared to the previous season,” Conab stated.
Brazil, the world’s leading producer and exporter of sugar, is expected to produce 46 million tonnes of sugar this season, which is 0.7% higher than the 2023-24 production.
