Sao Paulo: On Monday, Brazilian energy firm Raizen announced a significant achievement—it has become the first ethanol producer worldwide to receive certification for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), reports Reuters.
This type of fuel is crucial for the airline industry’s ambition to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Raizen, a collaboration between Cosan and Shell, shared that it had obtained international certification for producing this fuel at its Piracicaba plant. The certification, known as ISCC CORSIA Plus, is issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and it verifies that the ethanol produced in Piracicaba adheres to global standards for SAF production.
Brazil, known for its leadership in biofuels like ethanol and soy oil-based biodiesel, is seen as having the potential to play a major role in SAF production. This special fuel is created from sources like recycled vegetable oils or leftover crop materials.
