Cane crushing season in Maharashtra likely to delay due to extended monsoon

Pune: Sugarcane crushing season in Maharashtra for the 2022-23 season is likely to delay by a fortnight due to the extended monsoon season.

Delay in starting the crushing season may pose a challenge to the administration as the state is set to make another record of higher production this year.

While talking to The Times of India, Sanjay Khatal, managing director of Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation, said, “We had demanded the government to start crushing operations from October 1 but the government fixed the date at October 15. The rainfall has affected the cane harvesting operations as it is difficult to enter wet fields. If the area under sugarcane is the same as last year, we may face a similar situation as the previous year.”
