Pilibhit: The Sugarcane development department of Uttar Pradesh has stated that the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology must measure the acreage of sugarcane across the state for the 2023-24 crushing season, reports The Times of India.
This will facilitate the sugar mills to estimate the volume of sugarcane crops available for crushing for the forthcoming crushing season.
Sanjay R Bhoosreddy, additional chief secretary of the sugar industry and cane development department said, “This system will bring in full transparency and accuracy. The role of the middlemen from the cane supply chain will be eliminated by the application of GPS.”
The teams of the district cane development department and the sugar mills will jointly survey between April 15 and June 15 this year, he said.
The team members will be trained for this and the survey slips will be handed over to the farmers by the designated teams that will be on the spot, he said.
The teams will collect data on the area under cane cultivation, the types of varieties cultivated, sugarcane seeds nurseries and model cane fields equipped with drip irrigation systems, said Bhoosreddy.
