Sri Lanka’s sugar and rubber production saw an increase in October 2024, according to the agriculture sector data bulletin from the Economic Research Department of the Central Bank.
Bulletin mentions that domestic sugar production increased by 109.8 percent on year on year basis during October, while global sugar prices showed a decrease.
International sugar prices decreased amid the ongoing crushing season in India and Thailand and improving sugarcane crop prospects in the main producing countries, the CBSL reported.
As per the bulletin, sugar production in January-October 2024 was 79,252 MT, compared to 65,667 MT in the same period of 2023. Meanwhile, sugar imports amounted to 470,166 MT during Jan-Oct 2024, compared to 555,205 MT in the same period of 2023.
Domestic rubber production increased by 38.0 per cent year on year during October.
