Centre allocates additional domestic sugar quota to ensure sufficient supply & prevent further surge in prices

In order to ensure sufficient availability of sugar for domestic consumption for the ongoing summer and prevent domestic prices from surging further, the Department of Food & Public Distribution on Tuesday announced an additional quota of 2 LMT for sale in the month of April 2023. Earlier this month, the Centre had allocated 22 LMT to 525 sugar mills across the country.

Concerns about lower crop from major sugar producing states of Maharashtra & Karnataka and tighter supplies caused a surge in sugar prices. Prices have taken an uptick of ₹150-200/quintal within a month.

According to marketmen, “This was a much-needed step of the hour by the Centre considering the fact that sugar prices were taking a surge uncontrollably. An additional quota will bring ease in the tight supplies and make sugar prices cool down to better levels.”
