Mandya: With the cane arrears getting cleared at snail pace in Karnataka, the government comes to an action mode and asked the mills to pay the dues at the earliest. Sri Chamundeshwari Sugar Mill in Maddur taluk likely to face action if it fails to pay the cane growers.
Keeping in view the delay in the payment clearing process, Deputy Commissioner M.V. Venkatesh asked the Sri Chamundeshwari Sugar Mill to clear the dues of sugarcane farmers by August 25.
According to the reports, sugar mill owes Rupees 13.07 crore to sugarcane farmers, who supplied cane for the current crushing season. Recently, Deputy Commissioner held a meeting with the mill officials, where they have been instructed to clear the dues.
Law says that sugar mills are liable to pay the price within 14 days of the procurement of the sugarcane, and it should pay dues at 15 per cent interest rate if the conditions are violated.
Sugarcane farmers in Karnataka have intensified their protest against mills and government for the pending cane dues. Earlier, the farmers’ delegation had met former Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy to make him aware of the farmers suffering. Following which, he assured the delegation clearance of dues by sugar mills.
