Control sugar intake, but don’t stop it completely: Malaysian PM

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the importance of taking health knowledge seriously, particularly in relation to the risks of excessive sugar consumption, reported local media.

The Prime Minister highlighted that health literacy among Malaysians is still lacking.

“Obesity, excessive weight and diabetes rates are prevalent, so please, save the country, save the children, save our families and our parents by controlling sugar intake, (but) not stopping it completely.

“To combat obesity, reduce carbohydrate intake and increase physical activity. But remember, don’t limit exercise to just health campaigns.

“We need to prioritize our health. Even though we are busy, that shouldn’t be an excuse.

“Despite our busy schedules, we still find time to sleep and eat, so we should also make time for exercise,” he said during the launch of the 2024 National Wellness Month celebration, according to Bernama.

Also attending were Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

The Prime Minister stressed that health literacy and sugar reduction campaigns will only be successful if people start changing their eating habits immediately.

Anwar also called on business owners to actively support sugar reduction efforts by being mindful of their customers’ health when preparing food and beverages.

“We discuss advancements in AI, thriving industries, and excellent healthcare, but health literacy remains low among the public,” he said.
