The Government is pulling all stops to ensure the country’s smooth transition from fossil fuels to green energy. However, the latest report by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas indicates that the country’s petrol consumption increased by 117% in the last 10 years from 2013-14 to 2023-24.
The demand for diesel increased by 31%, liquified petroleum gas (LPG) by 82%, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) by 50%, it added. The good news is that consumption of kerosene dropped by 93% in the 10-year period.
The report said that the demand for petrol has climbed sharper than diesel in the 10-year period.
The overall demand for fuel increased by 5% year-on-year in the financial year 2023-24. As per the data, in FY24, the total consumption of fuel was 233.27 million tonnes, up from 223.02 million tonnes in the previous year.
