The Cuban government is taking several steps to revitalize the sugar industry to bring back the glory to the sugar sector.
As per the media report, the government has approved a proposal to revitalize the sector which includes a focus on areas like production, financial support, science, innovation and renewable sources of energy.
The central province of Villa Clara, Las Tunas and Holguin and Camaguey are the regions where sugarcane cultivation is concentrated in Cuba.
Liobel Perez, an official associated with the state-owned sugar company AZCUBA said, “Along with providing environment-friendly sources of energy, the sugar industry revival will connect different sectors of the Cuban economy.”
The U.S. embargo against the island affected the country’s access to funding to the sugar sector for development in infrastructure and buying machinery, pesticides and fertilizers, he said.
The island is a leading sugar producer in the Caribbean and produces sugar for domestic consumption as well as for export.
