Havana: Sugar productionin Cuba is reported to be lower this season and the country is likely to cancel the plan of exporting the sweeteners, stated the officials and the experts, reports Reuters.
The country has set a plan to produce 455,000 tonnes of raw sugar this harvest cycle and it is less than the previous one which hit a hundred-year low.
Cuba used to get huge foreign exchange through sugar export. But now the industry is struggling due to various issues.
The annual consumption of sugar is around 600,000 to 700,000 tonnes in the country and has a long-standing agreement to export 400,000 tonnes to China, which has been suspended now, said one of the experts in the sugar sector.
Sugar produced this harvest will be used for domestic consumption only, said State-run sugar monopoly AZCUBA.
