Cuba, once known as “Sugar Bowl” of the world seeks support of National Sugar Institute, Kanpur to enhance productivity of the it’s sugar units through modernization and technological advancements and to utilize by-products for producing many other value added products including green energy. The Cuban Research Institute on Sugarcane Derivatives (ICIDCA), under the aegis of the Sugar Enterprises Group of Cuba (AZCUBA) has intended to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding for three years for the purpose.
Earlier a team led by Ms. Mariela Gallardo Capote, General Director, The Cuban Research Institute on Sugarcane Derivatives visited the institute in February 2023 to look into activities and to have preliminary discussions. We had another round of discussions on the subject and now we have formally received the draft MoU from their end, said Prof. Narendra Mohan, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur.
Cuba was known as the ‘sugar bowl of the world’, as it used to have largest sugar industry which is now in decay and its position is now taken up by Brazil followed by India. Sugar Industry in Cuba was heavily dependent on exports to erstwhile Soviet Union and East European State but after collapse of Soviet Union, the sugar industry in Cuba got a set-back. The plant efficiencies and by-product management is wanting and thus they want us to show way for improvement, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur.
It was a wonderful visit to the institute and we are keen to enter into this agreement which focusses on conducting staff development programmes, exchange of researchers and technology transfer, informed Ms. Mariela Gallardo Capote, General Director, The Cuban Research Institute on Sugarcane Derivatives.
We are seeking approval of our administrative ministry, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution for formal signing of the agreement at the earliest.
