Bijnor: Sugarcane variety CO-0238 has helped cane growers to produce more sugarcane in Uttar Pradesh. It has helped farmers to grow their income. The man behind the wonder variety is Dr Bakshi Ram. He is a director at the Indian Council of Agriculture Research’s Sugarcane Breeding Centre in Coimbatore.
Today, this variety is being grown in the major lands of the state. Bakshi had come to the Bijnor district, where he was welcome by cane growers and Uttam sugar mill officials in the programme.
The mill administration felicitated him for his work in the sugarcane sector. He has developed more than 25 varieties of sugarcane crop that are high yielding. But out of them, CO-0238 is very popular.
Recently Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mill Association (UPSMA) general secretary Deepak Guptara had stated that, ” Among various factors, ‘Wonder Variety 238’ helped in better sugarcane production. It has a higher yield in terms of crop harvest as well as results in a higher percentage of sugar content.”
In this crushing season, Uttar Pradesh is leading in sugarcane production. And according to the Uttar Pradesh sugarcane minister Suresh Rana, 120 lakh tonnes of sugar production is expected in this season. Also, sugar recovery is estimated at above 11 per cent.
