Egypt achieves self-sufficiency in sugar production in 2025: Ministry

Cairo: Egypt has achieved full self-sufficiency in sugar production for the year 2025, with total output now exceeding 3 million tonnes, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. Officials say the country will no longer need to import sugar to meet local demand starting in 2026, reported Cairo Scene.

This milestone was made possible by the expansion of sugar crop cultivation, especially sugar beets. The area used to grow beets grew from 600,000 feddans in 2023 to over 780,000 feddans in 2025. Farmers were encouraged by higher government-set purchase prices, which rose to EGP 2,500 per tonne for sugar cane and EGP 3,000 per tonne for sugar beets.

This year’s harvest brought in around 620,000 tonnes of sugar from sugar cane and about 2.5 million tonnes from sugar beets. These numbers mark a significant increase compared to recent years and make Egypt self-sufficient in sugar for the first time in decades.

Agriculture officials say the development will ease pressure on the country’s foreign currency reserves, since there will be no need to import sugar. It is also expected to strengthen food security and help keep sugar prices steady in the local market.

The Ministry credited the achievement to government-led efforts that included improved farming advice and incentive programs aimed at boosting production of key crops like sugar.
