Egypt’s sugar reserves sufficient for 5.6 months: Ministry

On January 1st, the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade disclosed that Egypt’s sugar reserves are currently deemed adequate for 5.6 months. In an official statement, the Ministry further detailed that the nation’s wheat reserves can cover 4.3 months, with cooking oil and rice reserves standing at 5.1 months and 1.3 months, respectively.

Providing insights into the domestic supply scenario, the Ministry’s statement stated that local wheat supplies attained a volume of 3.79 million tons throughout the year 2023. Simultaneously, imported wheat supplies reached a total of 4 million tons during the same period.

Notably, in a move to address the needs of low-income citizens, the Ministry issued a 568,911 of new ration cards in 2023 underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring essential food provisions for those with limited financial means.
