El Nino won’t impact sugar industry in Philippines this year

Manuel Lamata, president of the United Sugar Producers Federation of the Philippines (United) said that the El Nino phenomenon won’t affect the sugar industry this year as most of the sugarcane grown in the province has already reached maturing ahead of milling season, reports Sunstar.

The phenomenon would benefit sugarcane farmers as the hot weather increases the sweetness of sugar, he said.

The hot weather will also not affect the price of sugar, he said.
The phenomenon would however affect cane cultivation next year as there would be a lack of irrigation in some parts of the province, said Lamata.

The onset of the El Nino phenomenon began last week, stated the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
