Maize is the third most widely grown grain. Its importance has increased in recent times, as it is not only used for human consumption and is vital for the poultry industry, but it is also rapidly emerging as an energy crop. This is because maize is used in producing ethanol, which together with petrol has a blend that will not only help reduce petroleum imports but also favour farmers. Farmers, therefore, end up being food and energy providers. The current production of maize is however not able to meet the demand for food, feed, and fuel. Increased production is therefore needed, reports Zee Business.
For this, the central government has initiated a scheme entitled “Enhancing Maize Production in the Catchment Areas of Ethanol Industries.” The experimental responsibility of the same has been handed over to ICAR’s Indian Institute of Maize Research. The aim is to increase maize production. This initiative will involve Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), farmers, distilleries, and the seed industry. Currently, seeds of high-yielding varieties are being distributed to farmers as part of the project.
