Ethanol industry in Pakistan faces shortage of Molasses

The reduction in the sugarcane cultivation area in Pakistan has affected the ethanol-producing plants in the country. The producers are facing a shortage of molasses and they may close soon after molasses stocks run out.

According to media reports, traders say, most producers’ molasses stocks will last only until August, after which there will be temporary closures.

Molasses is a byproduct of the sugar industry produced while crushing sugarcane. Over the past two years, the farmers shift to rice and corn against sugarcane has produced the shortage of molasses. The area under sugarcane cultivation of the year 2019-20 was reduced to 1.04 mn hectare, 6% less than the previous season.
