The government is aiming to set up a network of ethanol pumps in India, said Union Road and Transport minister Nitin Gadkari. He was speaking at the SIAM Annual Convention held recently.
Advocating the use of ethanol as an alternative fuel to petrol and diesel, he appealed to the auto industry to design flex-fuel engines that can run on both petrol and ethanol.
He assured the auto industry that the ethanol will be made available across the country and ethanol pumps will be set up across the country in the next 6 months, he said.
As per the government’s plan 10 per cent ethanol-blended petrol will be available across the country by 2022 and 20 per cent by 2025.
The central government with an aim to lower the expenditure on foreign exchange has set a target of blending 20 per cent ethanol with petrol by 2025. The roadmap for ethanol blending in India 2020-25 was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 5 this year on the occasion of World Environment Day.
