Shocking CCTV footage has captured the moment an ethanol tanker overturned on a highway in Santa Catarina, triggering a massive explosion that set 25 vehicles ablaze and left five people injured, reports Need To Know.
The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 6. The video shows the tanker approaching a curve at speed before tipping onto its side and sliding across the road. As the ethanol spilled, it ignited almost instantly, engulfing nearby vehicles in flames.
The fire spread quickly, with cars on the opposite side of the highway catching fire within seconds. In another video posted to social media, thick grey smoke can be seen rising from burning vehicles, while debris litters the highway.
Authorities confirmed that 22 cars and three trucks were affected by the fire. Among the injured were the truck driver and his wife, who was also in the vehicle at the time. Both suffered burns to their arms and legs.
Firefighters from multiple cities were dispatched to bring the blaze under control. Officials also removed a vehicle carrying explosives from the area as a precaution.
The highway has been closed in both directions, and there is no official word yet on when it will reopen. Emergency teams continue to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the crash.
