FAO warns of imminent famine in Gaza Strip

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has sounded the alarm over the worsening hunger crisis in the Gaza Strip. A report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) initiative predicts famine in the northern governorates by May 2024, with the entire population facing acute food insecurity.

The situation has rapidly deteriorated, with a significant increase in the number of people experiencing catastrophic levels of hunger compared to previous analyses. FAO Deputy Director-General Beth Bechdol emphasises the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to prevent famine.

The conflict has disrupted food supplies, leading to severe shortages and the collapse of food-related sectors. Livestock losses are a major concern, as they are crucial for the survival of families. FAO is mobilising agricultural supplies, including animal feed and veterinary kits, to address the crisis once access is granted.
