Farmers’ agitation for demanding higher sugarcane FRP continues

Mysuru: Sugarcane farmers staged a demonstration outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Monday demanding higher fair and remunerative prices (FRP) for sugarcane, reports The Hindu.

The agitation was a part of their protest that they had begun last week by blocking the highway near the ORR-Nanjangud Road junction.

The farmers under the banner of the Karnataka Sugarcane Cultivators Association participated in the agitation. They have stated that the cultivation cost of sugarcane had increased and the centre’s FRP of Rs 3050 is not sufficient to meet even the production cost.

The government had promised to hike sugarcane prices but has not taken any decision in this regard and the mills are about to start crushing operations, said farmers.

The association has stated that the next level of their agitation includes gherao the houses of the MLAs in the sugarcane belt if the government further delays increasing the price of the cane.
