Ambala: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of BKU Haryana (Charuni) and Ganna Sangharsh Samiti (GSS) blocked the national highway at Banondi village in Shahzadpur area of Ambala district on Monday to mark their protest against the delay in clearing their cane dues. The farmers blocked the highway for two hours.
According to the news report published in The Times of India, the Naraingarh sugar mill owes arrears of Rs 102 crore to the cane farmers for the ongoing crushing season 2020-21. The mill also owes dues worth Rs 3 crore from the last season.
BKU Ambala district unit head Malkiat Singh Sahibpura and GSS president Vinod Rana were leading the protest.
Farmers on March 10 had held a protest outside the mill demanding their dues. The mill management promised to clear the dues by March 20 but after the mill failed to do so the farmers launched an agitation for their demands.
“The mill has cleared the cane bills up to January 6 and owes around Rs 102 crore to the cane growers,” said Sahibpura.
