Farmers’ body permits farmers to fix price of sugarcane produce

Pilibhit: All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee has allowed Uttar Pradesh cane growers to fix the price for the sugarcane crop for the forthcoming crushing season 2019-2020, said VM Singh, national convener of the committee. All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee is the umbrella organization of 209 farmer unions in the country.

V M Singh, national convenor of the committee said, “The committee has decided to permit the cane growers to fix the selling price at Rs 435 in comparison to Rs 325 of the previous year after minister Suresh Rana informed the assembly that per quintal average cost of sugarcane production is Rs 290. The historic announcement will be done at a Kisan panchayat which will be held in Bilari in Moradabad district on October 18.”

Sugarcane farmers say that the cost of sugarcane production is increased; therefore, there is a need to hike cane price. Also, they are struggling with the pending cane dues. Sugarcane arrears has remained a major issue in Uttar Pradesh. Following which cane growers are staging demonstration and have also intensified their protest. They claim that their financial condition is worsening day-by-day as they have not received dues from mills. Farmers assert that they are unable to feed their families, nor able to pay school fees of their children.

In the month of July, Central government kept Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane unchanged at Rs 275 per quintal for 2019-20 crushing season for a basic recovery rate of 10 per cent as sugar mills in India claimed that they are finding it difficult to pay FRP of sugarcane as the average production cost of sugar is 35 to 36 rupees per kg as against the MSP of 31 rupees per kg.
