Farmers choose multi-cropping to overcome losses in cane cultivation

Pilibhit: Sugarcane farmers in Pilibhit are adopting the multiple-cropping pattern to recover the losses they incur by cultivating sugarcane crops, reports The Times of India.

As per the UP Council of Sugarcane Research (UPCSR), the production cost of sugarcane is Rs 2,41,356 per hectare for the year 2022-23 but the farmers have assessed the cost as over Rs 2,85,000.

The government institutions have assessed the cost of sugarcane per quintal as around Rs 311.42 while the farmers have calculated it at Rs 368 per quintal.

The farmers have stated that they are at a loss if they get the state-advised price (SAP) of sugarcane fixed by the government at Rs 350 per quintal.

We are growing potatoes on the farm with sugarcane to recover the loss, said a farmer.

“I have received Rs 1, 62,500 after selling 250 quintals of potatoes for Rs 650 per quintal. By deducting the cost of production of Rs 80,000, I earned a profit of Rs 82,500 per hectare,” he said.

Farmers are also sowing chickpeas and flax along with sugarcane to earn some profit that would compensate for their loss.
