Farmers disappoint over Haryana govt’s decision to hike cane price by Rs 10 per quintal

Ambala: Sugarcane farmers in Haryana are not happy over the state government’s decision to hike State Advised Price (SAP) for sugarcane by Rs 10 per quintal to Rs 372, reports Tribune India.

Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) has stated the hike in the cane price is a cruel joke on the farmers.

The state government increased SAP for cane after recommendations of a committee formed for the same. Sugarcane farmers want a hike in the cane SAP to Rs 450 per quintal and have launched an agitation for their demand from January 20 halting operations at the sugar mills in the state.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has appealed to farmers to resume the cane supply to the mills, promising that the government will hike SAP for cane again next year.

Gurnam Singh, BKU (Charuni) chief said, “We condemn the government’s decision to hike cane price by Rs 10 per quintal. We will continue our agitation and the next course of action will be decided after farmers convene a meeting for the same.”

Rakesh Bains, BKU (Charuni) spokesman said, “The government has failed to provide any relief to the farmers. Farmers are facing huge losses due to an increase in the input cost.”
