Farmers expect government to purchase sugarcane ahead of Pongal

Tiruvarur: Sugarcane farmers are worried as the government is yet to decide on their demand to purchase cane from them to distribute as a part of the ‘Pongal Gift Hamper’, reports The Hindu.

Farmers in and around the Mannargudi area staged a protest by obstructing a Mannargudi-Thanjavur Road on Friday morning urging the government to procure the ‘paneer karumbu’ (black stem sugarcane) to save them from penury.

The farmers claim that they have planted sugarcane by investing thousands of rupees hoping that the government would purchase their crop ahead of Pongal to distribute to people as gift hampers during the festival through ration shops.
