Farmers in Haryana to hold state-wide protest demanding hike in sugarcane price

Intensifying their agitation demanding a hike in sugarcane price, farmers in Haryana will be protesting outside the residences of ministers and MLAs belonging to the ruling alliance and the sugar mills, reports The Hindu.

The agitation has been led by Ganna Kisan Sangharsh Samiti and Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) whose representatives took this decision in Karnal.

As per the plan, they would burn effigies of the government outside the residence of MLAs on December 29 and obstruct sugarcane supply to mills for three hours on January 5, 2023. They will also launch sit-in agitation outside sugar mills across the state on January 5. The future course of their action will be decided in a Mahapanchayat called on January 10.

Rampal Chahal, vice-president of Samiti said, “Two months ago, Haryana Agriculture Minister J P Dalal had while interacting with the media hinted to hike support price for sugarcane to Rs 400 per quintal but the government has fixed the price at Rs 362 per quintal, same as the last year.”

“We want the government to fix the sugarcane price at Rs 450 per quintal as the input costs have increased substantially,” said BKU (Charuni) leader Rakesh Bains.
