Farmers in the Parumala district that have stopped cane cultivation after the closure of the Pulikeezhu Pampa sugar mill, 30 years ago have returned to cane cultivation again, reports New Indian Express.
The farmers have set up committees at the village level and Panchayat level to promote cane cultivation.
E K Raghunathan Nair, secretary of the Pampa Karimbu Karashaka Samiti (Sugarcane Farmers’ Association) said, “Farmers earlier quit sugarcane cultivation due to financial losses. Now we are happy that the gram panchayat and district panchayat have come forward to ensure support to cane farmers.”
Omallur Shankaran, president of the district panchayat has suggested reviving cane cultivation and he assured support to the cane farmers.
