Amroha, Uttar Pradesh: Farmers’ organisation Bhartiya Kisan Sangh has demanded that the sugar millers should clear the pending arrears with interest on the amount to the sugarcane farmers.
The Meerut unit of Bhartiya Kisan Sangh organised an online meeting and discussed the issues about the sugarcane cultivators and problems they are facing now.
The organisation has demanded that the government should intervene and ensure that the sugar mills follow the rules and clear the pending arrears to farmers on a priority basis.
Recently sugarcane minister Suresh Rana tweeted that during the 38-month tenure of the Yogi Adityanath government, the sugar mills had cleared Rs 98,382 crore of the sugarcane farmers. So far in the current crushing season, sugar mills paid Rs 19,328 crore to the farmers.
Coronavirus has impacted the sugar industry in India. And sugar mills are finding it difficult to sustain as sugar sales are down, which has created liquidity problem for the mills. The demand for sugar has been reduced as the industries like cold drinks, ice cream, bakeries and sweet shops are shut due to lockdown. As sales are down, sugar stocks are piling up in warehouses. And also they are unable to clear cane payment due to financial scarcity.
