Farmers threaten to launch an agitation if govt fails to clear pending cane dues

Sangrur: Sugarcane farmers have threatened to launch an agitation if the government fails to clear pending cane dues from Dhuri Sugar Mill before December 10, reports Tribune India.

“The sugar mill should have cleared our cane dues by March as the sugarcane crushing season ended in February. We are still waiting for the mill management to clear cane arrears,” said Harjeet Singh Bugra, chairman of the Sugarcane Growers’ Struggle Committee.

Farmers had deferred their agitation outside the Chief Minister’s office in Dhuri after they received assurance from the state government. The mill authorities cleared Rs 24 lakh on November 21 but have not cleared the remaining dues yet, said the farmers.

“We have been assured by the government that our dues will be cleared by December 10 and we would launch our protest if the government fails to fulfil the promise,” said Bugra.

We are trying to clear the cane dues of farmers, said Amit Gupta, SDM, Dhuri.
