Farmers warn of agitation if government fails to increase cane prices

Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of BKU have threatened to launch an agitation if the government fails to hike the sugarcane purchase price.

In a meeting organized at Chaubara village, district president Chaudhari Charan Singh said, “Sugar mills are delaying in clearing cane dues along with cane interest. Sugar mills should clear the cane dues immediately. Also, sugarcane price should be a hike and if the government fails to do it, then we will stage a demonstration.”

Farmers claim they are in financial crisis and are unable to meet their daily needs. Sugar mills also say that due to low sugar sales they too are facing financial shortage and therefore failed to clear the dues.

Recently, Cabinet approved a hike in the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for sugar season 2020-21 at Rs. 285/- per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10 per cent.
