Fiji Sugar Corporation worries about sugarcane burning

The increased incidents of burning sugarcane crops in the Labasa and Rarawai cane belt areas has increased the concern of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC).

According to the FBCNews, Rajiniesh Narayan, Manager Extension Service Agriculture, FSC said, these two sugar mills are receiving a lot of burnt cane for crushing.

He said, “It has become difficult to find out how cane burning is being taken up in the fields and crushing burnt cane has increased the difficulties of the sugar mills.”

Narayan says, crushing burnt cane leads to lowering of sugar quality. The farmers may be burning the dried cane after clearing their fields but there are chances that the fire might spread to the nearby fields damaging cane crops.
