Fiji: Sugar mills witness improvement in sugar recovery

Fiji sugar mills have crushed over 350,000 tonnes of cane till July 27. Sugar mills crushed 359,757 tonnes of sugarcane which is a 27 per cent increase as compared to the same period last year. The sugar mills had then crushed 284,356 tonnes of cane during last year.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation says sugar recoveries are improving with cane to sugar ratio improving to 12.4 to date compared to 13.0 recorded last week.

Of the three mills, Lautoka mill has crushed 47,765 tonnes of cane in three weeks since it began operations. The mill’s operations were interrupted for 11 hours due to heavy rain last week.

The Rarawai mill has been operating for five weeks and has crushed 129,720 tonnes of cane. The mill has crushed 32,426 tonnes of cane last week.

In the North, the Labasa Mill continues its good performance having crushed 182, 272 tonnes of cane in seven weeks of operation. The mill crushed 34, 083 tonnes of cane last week, slightly lower compared to the previous week.
