Fiji: Sugarcane farmers call for rail system upgrade

Sugarcane growers from Sigatoka have urged the government to upgrade the rail system so that they can transport cane by reducing transportation cost.

Tazim Ali Khan, Lomawai Sector farmer and Tuva TT2 Gang president said, “Rail is the cheaper mode of transportation of sugarcane as compared to the lorry to the Lautoka mill.

“The $54.36 forecast price per tonne for 2021 season is not feasible. To date, there has been no assurance given by the Sugar Ministry or Fiji Sugar Corporation on whether the Government will top up to the forecast price of $54.36 per tonne to $85,” he further added.

He said, “The farmers are demanding the government to continue the $85 per tonne guaranteed price for the ongoing season. The $54.36 price per tonne of cane will not cover our cost per tonne.”
