National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad has said that the government should make provisions to ensure that the cane farmers receive $85 per tonne for the 2022 season, reports Fiji Times.
The motions proposed by Prasad in this regard were defeated in the Parliament yesterday.
The government has not made any budget provision to cover the guaranteed price, said Prasad during the debate.
“If we do not make any provision, we will not be able to pay farmers the guaranteed price of $85,” he said.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said that the government will ensure that farmers get $85 per tonne as per promise and the allocation of $8 million was enough.
