Fiji: Survey to revive sugar industry begins

The Fiji National University (FNU) and Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) have launched a survey of the sugar industry to revive the sector.

As many as 600 farmers residing in Ba and Lautoka have been interviewed and the interview of the remaining 300 farmers in the rom Northern Division will be conducted soon.

The survey will help in finding the reasons behind the declining number of sugarcane farmers that have resulted in a decrease in sugar production.
Professor Roland De Marco, vice-chancellor of Research and Innovation, FNU said, “The survey conducted by SRIF and FNU will be used to address the key issues facing the sugar industry in Fiji.”

Prof Santiago Mahimairaja, SRIF chief executive officer said, “The sugarcane production in the country is declining despite using high yielding varieties.”

By the end of August, the preliminary findings of the research are likely to be released.
