Vinesh Kumar, Chief Executive of the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji, highlighted significant opportunities for improvement and growth in the sugar industry while discussing the 2016 to 2021 annual report of the institute.
Kumar emphasized that the sugarcane industry is a crucial part of the country’s economy and expressed optimism about its sustainability for at least the next decade. “If you look at the western division, towns, cities, and even the northern division, the sugarcane industry has driven the development of multiple industries. For me, the sugar industry is here to stay for the next decade,” he remarked.
Kumar stressed that the future success of the industry depends on collaboration across various sectors. “There needs to be a concerted effort. It’s not about blaming the millers or the growers. At a national level, there should be significant collaboration and synergy,” he stated.
He also noted the potential to maximize land resource use, benefiting both the sugarcane industry and the broader agricultural sector.
