Floods affect sugarcane farmers in Yamunanagar district

Yamunanagar, Haryana: Recent floods affect the sugarcane farmers in the district, reports Tribune India.

Cane grown over 10,287 acres of area has been severely damaged due to recent floods in the district, as per the survey conducted by the Haryana Farmers and Agriculture Department.

This will lead to the shortage of cane in the district which will ultimately increase the cost of cane. As the district is famous for jaggery production with 195 jaggery processing units, the production cost of jaggery will increase.

For sugar mills, less cane will be available for crushing this season due to floods. DP Singh, senior vice-president (cane), of Saraswati Sugar Mills, said the mill has set a target of crushing 175 lakh quintals of cane this season.

“Considering higher production cost the government should hike compensation to Rs 50,000 per acre,” said Sanju Gundiana, BKU district president.
