Focus on ethanol: Kerala allocates Rs 10 crore for research on cost-effective bio-ethanol manufacturing

Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal on Friday, presented the budget for the financial year 2025-26 in the Assembly.

Presenting the second Pinarayi Vijayan-led government’s fifth budget in the Legislative Assembly, he announced Rs 10 crore allocation for research into cost effective methods of manufacturing bio-ethanol in state.

Like many other states, Kerala is also now focusing on ethanol production.

India has made significant progress in ethanol blending in recent years. It has not only helped reduce reliance on crude imports but also assisted in enhancing farmers’ incomes and helping the industries. Ethanol is evidently being a game-changer with the aim to enhance India’s energy security. India has successfully met its blending targets in the past and remains on course to achieve 20% blending soon.

India achieved highest-ever ethanol blending in December 2024. In the ongoing ESY 2024-25, ethanol blending in petrol reached 18.2 percent in December, and cumulative ethanol blending from November 2024 to December 2024 touched 16.4 percent.
