FSSAI asks food business operators to submit data of expired or rejected food

New Delhi: To keep an eye on misused or returned expired foods and what action they have taken to put a stop to them, FSSAI asks food business operators to supply details regarding the expired and rejected foods. Under the existing regulations, it is mandated that food business operators ensure segregation for the storage of raw, processed, rejected, recalled or returned materials or products which will be distinguishably marked and secured.

According to the FSSAI, “In order to ensure that rejected/expired food items are not being rebranded and sold for human consumption under the guise of cattle feed, a new provision is being introduced in the Food Safety and Compliance System for the quarterly submission of information by FSSAI licensed food manufacturers including re-packers, re-labellers and importers

Food businesses should also maintain a record of products that fail quality checks in inspections or tests. They are supposed to track expired products or those returned because of quality issues to ensure these items do not re-enter the food supply.
