FSSAI certifies nearly 100 Indian prisons as eat right campuses

Nearly 100 jails across the country have been certified as ‘Eat Right Campus’ by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This marks a significant milestone in the promotion of safe and healthy eating habits within different institutions. This initiative, falling under FSSAI’s Eat Right India movement, aims to ensure safe, healthy, and sustainable food in workplaces and institutions, including prisons.

Prominent jails such as Tihar Prison in Delhi, Central Jail Gaya in Bihar, Modern Central Jail in Punjab, and Central Jail Rewa in Madhya Pradesh, among others, have participated and received certification. The highest number of certified jails came from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Punjab, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh.

The Eat Right Campus certification process involves rigorous assessment and adherence to FSSAI’s evaluation criteria, demonstrating the commitment of certified jails to promoting food safety and well-being. This initiative fosters a sense of responsibility and accountability towards food safety and nutrition within the prison system, contributing to the overall well-being of inmates.

The certification process includes comprehensive audits focusing on four key parameters: basic hygiene criteria, provision of healthy food, efforts towards building awareness about local and seasonal food, and training of Food Safety Supervisors and food handlers through FSSAI’s FoSTaC Programme.

The acknowledgement of over 2,900 workplaces as Eat Right Campuses nationwide highlights the positive impact of this initiative on individuals’ lives. As the initiative gains momentum, FSSAI aims to collaborate with institutions from various sectors to promote a culture of well-being and ensure access to healthy and hygienic food for everyone.
