The Grain Ethanol Manufacturers Association (GEMA), a leading body in India’s ethanol sector, is steadily gaining momentum in advocating for grain-based ethanol production. Established to represent the interests of grain-based ethanol producers, GEMA is making remarkable strides in supporting the government’s vision to reduce reliance on crude oil imports and boost farmers’ incomes.
Ethanol, a term less discussed in India a decade ago, has now emerged as one of the country’s primary priorities for energy and sustainability in the 21st century. While the initial focus of government policies was on sugarcane-based feedstocks for ethanol production, a notable shift occurred when grain-based feedstocks were also permitted. This decision proved to be a game-changer, catalyzing the growth of grain-based ethanol plants across the nation. This shift led to the establishment of several grain-based ethanol plants, aligning with the government’s vision of sustainable biofuel production and agricultural growth.
In response to the sector’s evolving needs, GEMA was formed to unite these producers under a common platform, working to strengthen their collective voice and advocate for the industry’s growth. Today, GEMA stands as a significant force in the industry, with member units spread across the country, collectively supplying over 800 crore liters of ethanol annually.
Dr. C.K. Jain, President of GEMA, highlighted the association’s impactful contributions within its first year of operation. “In just one year since its formation, GEMA has made significant progress in advocating for the grain-based ethanol industry. We’ve addressed key challenges and fostered stronger collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders,” he said.
“In the recent Q2 allocation of Cycle 3 for the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024-25, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) allocated a total of over 67 crore liters. Notably, GEMA members received over 52 crore liters, accounting for more than 77% of the total allocation for this cycle. This achievement underscores the trust and collective strength of GEMA’s members, reinforcing their pivotal role in advancing the Government of India’s Ethanol Blended Petrol Program (EBPP), driving sustainable growth in the sector and development of the nation,” he further added.
Additionally, GEMA’s continuous efforts in representing grain-based ethanol producers have yielded tangible benefits. One significant development was the government’s recent decision to allow the use of Food Corporation of India (FCI) rice for ethanol production. This move opens up new opportunities for distilleries, further supporting GEMA’s mission to ensure the growth of the sector. Additionally, the government reduced the price of rice for distilleries producing ethanol, providing a financial boost to producers.
With continued advocacy and strategic collaborations, GEMA says it is poised to remain at the forefront of India’s ethanol industry, contributing to the country’s energy security and agricultural prosperity.
