Germany plans to implement sugar tax

Policymakers in Germany are planning to implement sugar tax to reduce the consumption of sugary drinks.

A new tax on added sugar in a host of products has recently been considered one of the most effective policy actions to improve public health. However, oppositions are more concerned about the extra costs to both consumers and businesses.

Many argue that costs could have a greater impact on lower-income households that depend on more affordable sugary products. Additionally, industries in this sector might experience reduced sales and possibly downscaled operations.

As per media report, nine German states are said to be pushing for a tax on sugary drinks.
