Sanguem: Sugarcane farmers have decided to oppose any move of the government to close the Sanjivani sugar factory. The farmers met in a meeting at Wadem-Sanguem on Sunday and took the decision in this regard.
They claim if the factory gets close then their financial problems will increase and would left with no income to meet their daily needs. Farmers have also threatened to launch an agitation if the government failed to work on their demand.
A few days ago, Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had assured cane growers to look into the problems related to the sugar factory.
The factory located at Dharbandora is the only sugar factory in the state. It is reeling under financial stress due to maintenance and old machinery problems. The repair work of the factory usually starts after Ganesh Chaturthi but this year no work has begun so far. In last season, the factory failed to operate and the government had sent state’s cane to the sugar factory in Karnataka for crushing.
