Goa: Tender for sugar mill’s operation to be released in next few days

Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, has dismissed the ongoing protests by sugarcane farmers at Azad Maidan, referring to it as mere ‘show-off.’ Sawant asserted that the farmers have been benefiting financially from sugarcane cultivation for the past two years, implying that their current protest is unwarranted, reported Herald Goa.

In addressing the situation, Chief Minister Sawant emphasized the Goa government’s commitment to revitalizing the Sanjeevani Sugar factory. He announced that the tender for the operation of the factory would be released in the coming days. Sawant noted that despite two previous attempts to float the tender, there had been a lack of interest from potential bidders, a fact communicated to the farmers.

Expressing his dissatisfaction with the farmers’ protest, Sawant criticised their actions, stating that there was no need for such demonstrations, given the financial support they have received over the past three years, even without cultivating sugarcane. He assured the protesting farmers that the financial assistance would continue without any disruptions. Sawant’s comments underscore the government’s stance on the issue and its efforts to address the concerns of Sugarcane farmers in Goa.
