Government aims to boost ethanol production

The Indian government aims to boost ethanol production, therefore it is taking various steps for the same. According to the media reports, the government is considering extending subsidised loans to grain-based distilleries also under the ongoing scheme.

To strengthen the financial condition of sugar mills and cut oil imports, the government had asked mills to focus on ethanol production. Earlier, Centre had urged the mills for diversion of excess sugarcane and sugar for the production of Ethanol as a long term solution for addressing the problem of excess sugar stock.

The PTI news report says that the government is of the view that ethanol production cannot be dependent on one feedstock, that is sugarcane, for achieving the target of 20 per cent ethanol blending with petrol by 2030. Therefore it is focusing on other agri-feedstock such as rice, maize, sorghum and barley for ethanol production.
