Tiruchi: Following the state government’s decision to include sugarcane to be distributed as a gift hamper to the ration card holders on the eve of the Pongal festival, the district administration has formed a taluka-level committee to procure commercial crop from farmers, reports The Hindu.
The committee comprises officials from agriculture and cooperative departments. As many as 833 612 ration card holders are eligible for gift hampers in the Tiruchi district. The hamper includes 1 kg of rice as well as sugar, sugarcane, and Rs 1000 cash.
District collector M Pradeep Kumar visited sugarcane fields on Tuesday to check the quality of cane at various places in the district.
He stated that the procurement of cane will be done as per the procedure and the payment should be directly credited to the farmer’s bank accounts.
