Bijnor: With an end of Lok Sabha election, now the administration has come into action mode against sugar mills, who failed to clear pending cane arrears.
Expressing concern over the delay in paying arrears of cane producing farmers, Bijnor District Magistrate Sujit Kumar issued a strict warning against the sugar mills and asked them to clear dues or face action in case of non-payment.
DM has issued notices to four sugar mills, who owes sugarcane farmers Rs 639 crore.
Farmers organisation are also up the ante over pending dues and warned of an agitation if mills fail in clearing the cane arrears. To avoid any sort of violence, the administration is now stern on sugar mills.
On Friday, DM holds a meeting with sugar mills officials and said due to non-payment of cane dues, sugarcane farmers are suffering. He asked them to clear the sugarcane payment at the earliest or to face the strict action.
The government had introduced various measures, including a soft loan scheme for sugar mills to help them clear mounting cane arrears. But, millers failed to clear it, citing depressed sugar prices and scarcity of money.
