Government likely to review wheat ban in March

A review of the ban on wheat exports will be taken by the government in March 2023 when there will be greater clarity on the harvest of the Rabi crop, said sources from the government, reports Financial Express.

Winter sowing season is yet to finish and the area under wheat cultivation has increased by 25% compared to last year. The government is expecting a bumper wheat production in the current crop year in June 2023 if the weather remains favourable, stated the sources.

The intense heatwave in March 2022 affected the wheat yield in the 2021-22 crop year lowering the output. This resulted in the government banning wheat export in May. In 2021-22 wheat output dropped by 3% to 107 million tonnes, as per the government officials but the private traders estimated it to be below 100 million tonnes (MT).
